Current Research and Development Projects

Biochar Replacement for Portland Cement

ongoing since April 2023

Biochar material is investigated as replacement material for Portland cement in concrete and mortar applications.

Key notes

  • Early strength development
  • Water demand and mitigation
  • Compatibility with Natural Pozzolans
  • Freeze / Thaw performance
  • Elevated temperature performance

Natural Pozzolans

ongoing since March 2023

Natural pozzolans (NP) are evaluated using chemical and physical testing methods. Results of XRD and XRF methods are combined and correlated to the compressive strength data sets of mortar cubes. Objective is to ascertain the reactivity of NP materials based on the chemical composition of the amorphous (= reactive) components.

Key notes

  • Characterization of Natural Pozzolans
    • XRD and XRF
    • Compressive Strength
    • Hydration Products of OPC and NP
  • Water demand and mitigation
  • Freeze / Thaw performance
  • Elevated temperature performance
